Bangkok-based sales and distribution outfit Fearfolks has acquired world sales rights to “Someone Special,” a Thai-Chinese thriller co-directed by Petong Sakulchai and Ariel Feng, and will represent the title at the Cannes Market.
“The film explores emotional isolation, shame, trauma, self-worth, dependency and the tension between wanting to be loved and fearing being truly seen by another person,” Sakulchai said. “At its core, the film is about the struggle to continue living while carrying an inner reality that feels invisible to the outside world.” Popular on Variety
Rounding out the cast are Ben Brown (“Doctor Climax,” “Rak Nai Roi Luang”) and Fern Supanare (“Deep”). Producers include TV Pool Group and 100 Caruso. The film also marks the debut collaboration for New York Film Academy graduates Sakulchai and Feng.
“At Fearfolks, we want to work with filmmakers telling impactful stories, so we can help bring them to the forefront. ‘Someone Special’ is a story of two people struggling to find a connection, told in unconventional Thai-thriller lens,” said Hans Audric Estialbo, CEO of Fearfolks.
Fearfolks previously distributed Thailand’s highest-grossing horror franchise, “Death Whisperer,” in India, along with “Good Boy” and Chris Stuckman’s “Shelby Oaks.” The banner is also set to bring A24’s “Backrooms” and “Mother Mary,” as well as Neon’s “Leviticus” and “Hokum,” to Thai audiences.
