DOHA FILM INSTITUTE (DFI) GRANTS PROGRAMME

The Doha Film Institute is the primary engine for independent cinema funding in the MENA region, and one of the most important international grant bodies for filmmakers from the Global South. Founded in Qatar, DFI provides non-recoupable funding of up to $100,000 for feature production through its bi-annual grants programme, which has supported over 1,000 projects from 46 countries. DFI grantees gain access to Qumra, the annual industry event connecting funded filmmakers to international sales agents, producers, and festival programmers. UPDATE (March 2026): Due to the Iran conflict, Qumra has moved to an online-only format for its 2026 edition. The grants programme itself continues to operate as normal — the online shift affects only the in-person industry event component. DFI has confirmed that grantees will still receive full access to Qumra matchmaking and mentorship sessions via the online platform.

Insider Tips

For North African filmmakers, DFI is one of the most accessible and substantial funding sources with full eligibility across all stages. The 1,000+ project milestone makes a DFI grant a powerful credibility signal for further fundraising. Note: Qumra 2026 has moved online-only due to the Iran conflict, but the networking and mentorship value remains — and online participation may actually be more accessible for African filmmakers who would otherwise face travel costs to Doha.

Set a reminder for July 2026 to watch for the Fall 2026 grants cycle opening.
