
FILM INDEPENDENT SCREENWRITING LAB π’ OPEN NOW
Film Independent is a non-profit organisation in Los Angeles supporting independent filmmakers worldwide, known also for producing the Spirit Awards β the leading awards for American independent cinema. Its Screenwriting Lab is a full-time, two-week residential programme held each spring in Los Angeles, pairing selected screenwriters with Creative Advisors for intensive script development. UPDATE (March 2026): Film Independent has also opened applications for its Documentary Producing Lab and Fiction Producing Lab (applications opened 9 March 2026). The Documentary Producing Lab supports documentary producers in developing their projects with industry mentorship. The Fiction Producing Lab provides the same for fiction producers. Format
Feature films only. Film Independent also runs a separate Episodic Directing Intensive for TV/series (focused on directing rather than writing).
Eligibility
Emerging screenwriters worldwide. Completed fiction feature screenplay required. International scripts must be in English or with an English translation.
What You Get
Intensive one-on-one meetings with a Creative Advisor over two weeks in Los Angeles. Group workshop sessions. A 5-minute pitch session with industry executives at the end. Access to Film Independent's extensive industry network. Possible eligibility for additional grants including a $25,000 Climate Entertainment Development Grant and $10,000 fellowships for specific communities.
What to Submit
Cover letter (500 words), artist statement (750 words), project development history, full screenplay, directing sample if you plan to direct.
