SHEFFIELD DOCFEST MEETMARKET
Sheffield DocFest is the UK's leading documentary festival and one of the world's most influential documentary markets. Its MeetMarket is now in its 21st edition and is widely considered the world's most productive documentary pitching forum — with 150+ international funders, broadcasters, festival programmers, and sales agents attending, and curated 30-minute one-on-one meetings for every selected project. Past MeetMarket projects include films that went on to Academy Award nominations and wins. Sheffield DocFest has an explicit commitment to internationalism and inclusivity. In 2026, the festival especially encourages submissions from projects originating from podcast storytelling — a rapidly growing format in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.

Insider Tips
Sheffield explicitly wants diverse global voices. Your director's intent statement — why YOU specifically must tell this story — is the most important element of your application. An African documentary with strong visual access and a universal story is exactly what the MeetMarket selection committee responds to.

PART FOUR FESTIVAL-BASED FINANCING MARKETS Submit a completed or near-complete film — if selected, you automatically access a co-production forum or financing market HOW THESE WORK: In Parts One to Three, you submitted a script or treatment for a project you want to make. In Part Four, you submit a film or documentary you have already made (or nearly made). If selected for the festival, you automatically gain access to an industry pitch market where you can raise money to complete the film, find distribution, and meet co-production partners for your next project. The festival selection badge does the credibility work that a broadcaster letter of interest does at a development-stage pitch.
